The Rioja region of Northern Spain has undergone a transformation in the last decade. The wine made from Tempranillo offers spicy blackcurrant and soy flavours with a cedary note. It finishes dry and savoury. **** (88)

Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2009 (Ontario)
$14.95 LCBO #172643)
This rosé won a silver medal at the Ontario Wine Awards this year.  Deep pink in colour, it has a nose of redcurrant and raspberry with a mineral note. It's a blend of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabaret Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Medium-bodied, crisply dry it has flavours of raspberry and blood orange. ****½ (89)

Feudi di San Marzano Negroamaro 2008 (Sicily)

The Negroamaro grape grown in southern Italy produces deeply coloured wines with rustic flavours of plum and black cherry. The kind of wine you see in those Italian movies when four generations of the family are lunching outdoors at a long table. ***½ (86)
