Lejay Lagoute Kir Royal
Kir is a French cocktail made with crème de cassis and white wine. It was named for the late Félix Kir, a Mayor of Dijon in Burgundy. Kir Royale uses champagne and crème de cassis. You can spare yourself the trouble of making it yourself by picking up a bottle of Lejay Lagoute Kir Royale. The wine is lightly bubbling with a medium-sweet and persistent flavour of blackcurrants. Just the job for New Year's parties. It costs $15.95 at the LCBO but goes up a dollar on January 5th. That's Lejay Lagouute Royal from France. Segura Viudas Brut Reserva
Looking for a crisp, dry sparkling wine for New Year's Eve but you don't want to pay champagne prices? Well, head for the Spanish shelves at the LCBO and pick up a bottle of Segura Viudas Cava. For $14.25 you get a straw-coloured sparkler with a stony nose and green apple and lemon flavours. Remember, when removing the cork, hold it still in one hand and slowly twist the bottle away from it in the other. This way you won't have a gusher. That's Segura Viudas Cava from Spain.
