Terrale Nero d'Avola 2003 (Sicily)
$9.95 (LCBO #62177)
A gutsy bargain from Sicily. Ruby coloured with a raisiny, earthy nose; medium-bodied, sweet black cherry and chocolate flavours; soft and easy drinking, fills the palate. ***½
Food match: hamburgers; ribs

McWilliams Cabernet-Merlot 2004 (South East Australia)
$11.95 (LCBO #621599)
Deep ruby colour; vanilla, oak-driven with blackcurrant nose; bull-bodied, spicy blackcurrant with a medicinal note; soft on the palate; makes no demands. ***½
Food match: roast beef; confit of duck

Fat Bastard Shiraz (Pays d'Oc)
$28.90 for 1500 mL (LCBO #621144)
Ruby colour; raspberry and pepper nose with some minerality; leaner than Australian Shiraz but enough raspberry flavour; well balanced and firmly structured. ***½
