Carmen Chardonnay 2005 (Chile)
$9.95 (LCBO #235663)
This has to be the best Chardonnay on the general list under $10. Deep straw colour with a nose of apple, pineapple and vanilla oak. Medium- to full-bodied with fresh flavours of pineapple and orange and a grassy note. Great value. ****
Food match: roast chicken; pork chops with apple sauce

Beringer Stone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (California)
$13.90 (LCBO #606798)
A bargain-priced California Cab. Ruby coloured with a nose of cassis and pencil lead; sweet, jammy fruit, a little short but flavourful while it lasts with soft powdery tannins on the finish. ***½
Food match: Lamb burgers; ribs

Fairview Goats Do Roam 2004 (South Africa)
$12.95 (Vintages Essential #718940)
You have to go to a Vintages outlet for this good value red. The name infuriates the French with its punning reference to Côtes du Rhône. Except that they really do have goats on the property. Deeply coloured with a smoky, blackberry nose and evident oak; medium-bodied, fresh and lively on the palate with good acidity. Good value. ****
Food match: BBQ steak; aged cheddar
