680 NEWS wine reviews – March 17–19, 2006

Terrale Nero d'Avola 2003 (Sicily)
Some of the best value red wines these days are coming out of Sicily made from the island's native Nero d'Avola grape. A gutsy bargain is Casa Vinicola Calatrasi Terrale Nero d'Avola 2003. It's $9.95. The wine is ruby coloured with a raisiny, earthy nose; it's medium-bodied with sweet black cherry and chocolate flavours. On the palate it's soft and easy drinking. Try it with hamburgers or ribs. That's Casa Vinicola Calatrasi Terrale Nero d'Avola 2003 from Sicily – and if you didn't have time to write it down you can find it on tonyaspler.com. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler.
$9.95 (LCBO # 621177)

Vina Carmen Chardonnay 2005
If you like Chardonnay that makes a statement you're going to love this one – and you're going to love the price. It's Vina Carmen Chardonnay 2005 from Chile's Casablanca Valley. The wine is straw coloured with an impressive nose of apple and pineapple with a touch of oak. The flavour is pineapple and orange with a note of freshly cut grass, very full in the mouth with good balancing acidity. Now here's the clincher – the price is $9.95. It's a really bold wine that you can match with chicken or pork. That's Vina Carmen Chardonnay 2005 from Chile. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler.
$9.95 (LCBO #235663)
