And That's the Truth...

Cocktails Anyone?
by Sheila Swerling-Puritt

I think it's safe to say that vodka is one of the world's favourite distilled spirits. Hard-core vodkamanes love this crystal clear liquid's breathtaking power, neat or on the rocks. Cocktail fanciers have been tossing back Screwdrivers, Bloody Marys and Caesars for decades. Bartenders have combined this spirit with every possible mix in endless combinations. The resulting drinks almost always work, making vodka a necessity for your bar at home.

Scores of vodkas are available in Canada. Some opt for extreme purity and smoothness. Others come flavoured with buffalo grass, hot peppers or other sweet or savoury additions. One new product recently listed in Canada in the pure and smooth category is Pravda Vodka, right now only available in Ontario (but has been offered for listings in other Provinces). Pravda, the word for "truth" in Russian and Polish, is a luxury Polish vodka produced since 1743. Its home is the pristine Carpathian mountain district of Bielsko-Biala a renowned region of Polish vodka production.

The spirit is made from costly late-harvest rye (for a "mellow" taste) in small batches under the strict guidance of sixth-generation master distiller Aleksandra Kulak. Natural clean spring water and an impurity-busting five-distillation process pretty much guarantee Pravda's purity and smoothness.

I couldn't help but notice Pravda's frosted long-necked, punted "Champagne of Vodka" bottle dressed with a chunk of faux Tanzanite, the expensive purple-tinged blue gemstone mined only in Tanzania. Believe it or not, someone finds Pravda's medallions so attractive that they been turning them into necklaces and selling them on eBay. Frankly, I'd rather buy the whole bottle, full!

Great summer drinks:

Moscow Mule

  • 2 oz. Pravda Vodka
  • ½ fresh limes
  • Ginger beer
  1. Pour vodka into a highball filled with ice.
  2. Squeeze lime into glass.
  3. Top up with cold ginger beer.
  4. Gently stir.
  5. Garnish with a slice of lime.

Vodka Summer Sunset

  • ½ oz. Campari
  • 5 oz. fresh orange juice
  1. Place ice cubes into highball glass.
  2. Pour ingredients into glass.
  3. Stir.
  4. Garnish with an orange twist.
