 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Prosecco di Valdobbiadene
  • Dog House Checkers' Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
  • Rothschild Viognier 2004

Prosecco di Valdobbiadene (Veneto)
($13.25 LCBO #340570)
A solid substitute for Champagne is a sparkler from Italy's Veneto region made from the Prosecco grape by the co-operative of Valdobbiadene. The bouquet reminds me of wet stones and spring flowers and the flavour is crisp with a long lemony flavour. ***½
Food match: aperitif wine; tapas

Dog House Checkers' Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (California)
($14.85 LCBO #619478)
Kendall-Jackson' Dog House Checkers' Cabernet Sauvignon is deep ruby-purple in colour with a spicy blackcurrant nose and a hint of oak. It's medium-bodied and well extracted with a sweet cassis flavour and a firm finish. ***½
Food match: BBQ lamb; hamburgers

Rothschild Viognier 2004 (Pays d'Oc)
$10.95 (LCBO #619221)
This well-priced wine may not have the intense varietal character for a Viognier, but it's cleanly made with light fruit character (white peach with a floral note and a dry finish) and the price is right. ***½
Food match: devilled eggs; Caesar salad
