ABSOLUT Variety

Cocktails Anyone?
by Sheila Swerling-Puritt

How many of you out there know what a line extension is? No, it's not a bunch of plastic woven into your hair before a party. It's the development of hot new products based on already successful ones. As a child, I didn't know that Heinz 57 referred to the number of products in their line. (It's up to about 1,100 now. Who knew ketchup would come in green?) I also never expected I'd have to sift through fifty different flavours of jelly beans to pick out my favourites – red, black and purple – while tossing aside the cotton candy, watermelon, and Harry Potter–inspired Bertie Botts Beans in grass or gross varieties. Like it or lump it, line extensions work, and they're everywhere.

It shouldn't surprise us to find a lush crop of line extensions growing on the fertile soil that is vodka. You can stretch this white spirit in any direction. I started adding my own flavours to vodka – a whiff of dry vermouth and a couple of olives in a vodka martini. I then discovered Zubrówka Vodka, flavoured with bison grass. This herbaceous vodka has been a favourite of mine for years.

These days I use the lemon-flavoured vodka for cocktails, and now I'm happy to add ABSOLUT RUBY RED, the grapefruit-flavoured vodka, to my repertoire in the freezer. This absolutely new line extension is now available in Canada and is great neat over ice or in cocktails. A classic martini takes on a whole new persona when just a drop or two of the RUBY RED is floated on the cocktail. (Grapefruit products are a bad mix with the increasingly popular Lipitor and other meds. Check your package inserts.)

All of ABSOLUT's products are made with only natural ingredients and no sugar is added.

Here are number of ABSOLUT's recipes using their products.
