Château des Charmes Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (Ontario)
$24.95 (Vintages #935957)
Ontario goes Bordeaux for this lovely claret-style wine. Deep ruby in colour with a classic nose of cedar, vanilla, blackcurrant with an inky note; medium to full-bodied with drying red berry flavour, firm structure; well balanced and drinking well now. ****
Food match: rack of lamb; grilled quail

Lailey Vineyard Riesling 2005 (Ontario)
$13.95 (from the winery, 905-468-0503, www.laileyvineyard.com)
Medium straw colour; a bouquet of lime, grapefruit blossom and minerals; medium-bodied and full on the palate thanks to a warm vintage – lemony, crab apple flavour with good length. Good value. ****
Food match: pork and apple sauce; Thai food

Cookoothama Shiraz 2004 (South Eastern Australia)
$13.95 (LCBO #619460)
A useful addition to the burgeoning Shiraz category at the LCBO. Ruby coloured with a nose of vanilla oak, spice and red fruits; medium-bodied, raspberry, blackcurrant and cherry flavours driven by lively acidity. ***½
Food match: veal chop; roast beef
