680 NEWS wine reviews – September 29–October 1, 2006

Niagara Vintners 20 Bees LH Vidal 2005
Niagara Vintners 20 Bees is a new Ontario winery with a difference – it's an association of 19 growers and the entrepreneur who got them together. Among their first release is 20 Bees Late Harvest Vidal 2005. It comes in the half-bottle format like all Ontario dessert wines. Straw coloured with a nose of honeyed peaches, it's full-bodied and hefty on the palate with a sweet candy-apple flavour. The sweetness is cut by good balancing acidity which gives the wine good length on the palate. It costs $18.95 for 375 mL. That's Niagara Vintners 20 Bees Late Harvest Vidal 2005. Serve it with apple strudel or stilton cheese. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #184990)

Out of the Box Merlot Tetra Pack
Among the dozens of tetrapaks I've had to taste lately, one stands out. It's a blend of Ontario wine with imported wine called Out of the Box Merlot. It costs $12.95 for 1000 mL, and from its taste I'd say the imported component comes from Chile. It's dense purple-ruby in colour with a bouquet of vanilla oak and blueberry, flavours that confirm on the palate. The wine is medium-bodied and finishes with firm tannins. A good hamburger or pizza wine. That's Out of the Box Merlot Tetra Pack from Ontario with off-shore wine blended in. For Post City magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #16287)
