Domaine Pinnacle Ice Cider (Quebec)
$39.95 (LCBO #6924, 375 mL)
In Quebec, the signature wine that has yet to be discovered by the world is Ice Cider. Apples, instead of grapes, are left to freeze in winter. The result is a sweet wine that tastes of cider, smells like calvados and honey and has great balancing acidity. Now at the LCBO is a gift pack of Domaine Pinnacle Ice Cider 2005. It has a lovely sweet apple and pineapple flavour and comes with two small glasses. ****½
Food match: foie gras; blue cheese

Henry of Pelham Cabernet Merlot Meritage 2004 (Ontario)
$14.95 (LCBO #504241)
A good value Bordeaux-style blend. The wine is deep ruby in colour, with a nose of cedar, red currant and red cherries; it's medium-bodied, well balanced with a firm structure. ***½
Food match: lamb shanks; beef casserole

Beringer Founders' Estate Chardonnay 2005 (California)
$19.90 (LCBO #534230)
Classic Napa Valley Chardonnay at a decent price. Medium straw colour; spicy oak and apple on the nose; full-bodied and mouth-filling with sweet tropical fruit flavours and spicy oak; nicely balanced with good length. ****
Food match: veal chop; crab salad
