680 NEWS wine reviews – January 5–7, 2007

Quinta do Portal LBV
Late Bottled Vintage port – LBV for short – is the ideal cold-weather drink. It's like Christmas pudding in a glass. A great addition to the LCBO shelves at this season is Quinta do Portal LBV from Portugal's Douro Valley. It costs $21.95 a bottle. This fortified wine that will fortify you has great depth of colour; the bouquet is sweet mulberries and dark chocolate. It's rich and sweet and full on the palate, nicely structured with a mellow mouth feel. Match it with Stilton cheese or a chocolate dessert, or serve it with walnuts at the end of a meal. That's Quintal do Portal Late Bottled Vintage Port. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($21.95, LCBO #613901)

Marques de Riscal Rueda 2005
If you like Sauvignon Blanc, you'll like this wine, especially for the price. It's Marques de Riscal Rueda 2005. Rueda is a region in northern Spain, northwest of Madrid. The wine is made from local Verdejo grapes with 15% Viura. It's medium straw in colour with a greenish tint; The nose is reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc – slightly vegetal with aromas of guava, peach and cut grass. It's crisply dry with a fine balance of fruit and acidity and a citrus-like finish. It's great value at $9.75 a bottle. Its the kind of wine that goes well with seafood dishes or grilled fish. That's Marques de Riscal Rueda 2005 from Spain. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($9.75, LCBO #36822)
