680 NEWS wine reviews – January 19–21, 2007

Bellingham Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Sauvignon Blanc is a very versatile wine when it comes to matching with food. In fact, if I were on a desert island and I was restricted to one white wine, I'd choose Sauvignon. The two great producing regions for this very dry wine are the Loire Valley in France and New Zealand. Stylistically, between the bracing acidity of the Loire and the lush passion fruit flavours of New Zealand is Bellingham Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from South Africa. And it's a lot more affordable. For $11.95 you get a wine with the taste of green figs, limes and cut grass. Very crisp and refreshing and great with fish, seafood or goat's cheese. That's Bellingham Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from South Africa. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($11.95, LCBO #665315)

Beringer Founders' Estate Chardonnay 2005
The trend in white wines today is for less oak and more fruit. But there are some California producers who still have a love affair with oak barrels. Beringer makes those big, mouth-filling Chardonnays that you can drink with steak. Beringer Founders' Estate Chardonnay 2005 is a Classic Napa Valley Chardonnay at a decent price. That is $19.90. Medium straw in colour, it has a nose of spicy oak and apple. It's full-bodied and concentrated with sweet tropical fruit flavours and spicy oak. For all its fleshiness it's nicely balanced with good length. I had it with a veal chop and it was delicious. That's Beringer Founders' Estate Chardonnay 2005 from California. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($19.90, LCBO #534230)
