Croix-Milhas Maury (Roussillon)
$11.15* (Vintages #22822, 500 mL bottle)
If you're looking for something sweet for Valentine's Day and chocolates don't cut it anymore, try a sweet wine from the Roussillon appellation in southern France, near the Spanish border. It's a unique wine produced by adding brandy to the fermenting Grenache grapes. The effect – like port – is to stop the grapes sugars fermenting, leaving the wine very sweet and high in alcohol. Croix-Milhas Maury contains 16.3 per cent alcohol. It's deep purple-ruby in colour with a port-like nose of black cherries with a floral grace note. It tastes of spicy, sweet mulberries. Serve it chilled. Great value. ****

Croix-Milhas Rivesaltes Ambré (Roussillon)
$10.55* (Vintages #27581, 500 mL bottle)
Here's another Valentine's Day recommendation from the same producer. You really have to have a sweet tooth for this one. It's made from a blend of Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Macabeu and Muscats. As the name suggests, it's deep amber in colour, with a nose of crystallized orange peel and fruitcake. It's sweet and thick on the palate with a nutty finish. How sweet is it? Well, it registers 27 on the LCBO sugar scale. ***½

Bodega Lurton Pinot Gris 2005 (Argentina)
$11.15* (LCBO #556746)
Grown in the Valley de Uco, southeast of the better-known Mendoza Valley. The wine is light straw in colour with a minerally, peach pit nose. It's medium bodied with a round, unctuous mouth feel and a touch of sweetness in mid palate with a lovely fresh peach flavour. Great value. ***½
Food match: white meats; fish

* Prices include the new 20¢ deposit, redeemable at Beer Store outlets.
