Supernal Sipping Chocolate

It's always interesting to attend the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo in Toronto. Every year I find new products to sample, some of which not only catch my eye but pique my taste buds. This show also provides the opportunity to re-acquaint myself with some old standbys. These days it's as important to jog my memory as it is to jog my body...

One great find this year is Bellagio Sipping Chocolate, an absolutely supernal sipping chocolate which is just beginning to find its way onto shelves in Canada. It is widely known that I have a black belt in chocolate, and while on a tour through artisanal chocolate shops in Torino Italy, I enjoyed chocolate that was better than anything I had ever tasted. Now this dark rich powdered drink fits right up there with those other benchmarks.

Bellagio's brilliant beverage is velvety in texture and coats your mouth with deep dark sensuous chocolate flavours. It's delicious as a hot bitter-sweet chocolate beverage, but here are a few adult drink suggestions for this winter's après ski and skating parties. They'll replace calories you burned on the hill or on the ice and warm you from the inside out. Since this February's temperatures are brutal (I can only hope that Wiarton Willy's replacement's pronouncement is correct... an early spring), I am most content to look out the frosted windows while I sip my hot chocolate and will happily forgo the caloric marshmallow.

Chocolate Zephyr

  • 1 Tbsp. Bellagio Sipping Chocolate
  • 1½ oz. Havana Club 7 Años Rum
  • 1 oz. Tia Maria
  • 8 oz. whole milk
  • dusting of freshly grated nutmeg
  1. Heat milk and slowly dissolve the chocolate powder into the milk.
  2. Add rum and liqueur.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Dust with nutmeg.

 
Troika Toddy

  • 1 Tbsp. Bellagio Sipping Chocolate
  • 2 oz. Wyborowa Vodka
  • 1 oz. Jameson Irish Cream Liqueur
  • ½ tsp. vanilla
  • 8 oz. hot whole milk

  1. Slowly add the liqueur into the chocolate powder stirring until it is a smooth paste.
  2. Add the vanilla and vodka
  3. Top up with hot whole milk.
  4. Mix well.

If you prefer it as cocktail, use cold milk, shake well over ice, and pour it into a cocktail glass.
