680 NEWS wine reviews – February 23–25, 2007

Lurton Terra Sana Syrah 2005
In the Charentais region of France the Lurton Brothers, Jacques and Francois, make an organic Syrah-Merlot blend called Terra Sana – which translates as clean or healthy earth. The price is quite healthy too. The 2005 vintage sells at the LCBO for $13.15 a bottle. The Lurtons are French but they have a thing about the New World style of winemaking. Their wines are fruit forward and accessible. This one is purple in colour with a nose of blackberries and white pepper; it's dry, but there is a suggestion of sweetness in mid-palate with a soft tannic landing. That's Terra Sana Syrah 2005 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO 320580 , $13.15)

Rosemount Diamond Shiraz 2005
Rosemount Diamond Shiraz has a new look for the 2005 vintage. The bottle has been squared off at the bottom to give it a diamond footprint. Very classy and easy to grip. And you'll like what's inside too. The wine is deep ruby in colour with a nose of black cherries and ground pepper. It's full on the palate with blackberry and blue berry flavours, firmly structured with great balance. It costs $16.15 a bottle and for my money it's the best Australian Shiraz under $20 at the LCBO. Try it with hearty meat dishes, like pepper steak or venison stew. That's Rosemount Diamond Shiraz 2005 from Australia. For post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO 302349, $16.15)
