680 NEWS wine reviews – March 9–11, 2007

Botalcura Syrah Malbec 2004
The wines of Botalcura in Chile are not like Chilean wines at all. They are more in the style of the Southern Rhone, which is not surprising since the winemaker, Philippe Debrus, is French. His family owns a winery in the Languedoc region and he learned his winemaking there. One of Debrus' wines – Botalcura Syrah Malbec 2004 – is currently at Vintages stores. It's a real bargain for $14.94. On the nose you experience dark chocolate and lilac. It's dry with a spicy black raspberry flavour, full on the palate with a good spine of acidity. It's only available at Vintages. That's Botalcura Syrah Malbec 2004. If you can't remember the name, check it out on 680NEWS.com and click on The Wine Guy. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (Vintages # 18630, $14.95)

Rosemount Diamond Cellars Shiraz Cabernet 2006
I'm always on the lookout for wines that punch above their weight in terms of quality for the price. Chile and Argentina are my usual sources for such products, but I found a very pleasing wine from Australia for both flavour and price. It's Rosemount Diamond Cellars Shiraz Cabernet 2006. Ruby in colour, it has a nose of cedar and red berries with a floral grace note. Any time I smell flowers in a wine I know I'm on to something good. The fruit of this Shiraz-Cabernet blend is juicy and sweet – a well-structured, easy-drinking wine. It costs $13.15 a bottle. You can serve it with a variety of red meat dishes. That's Rosemount Diamond Cellars Shiraz-Cabernet 2006 on the Australia shelves at the LCBO. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #214270, $13.15)
