 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Chateau Bonnet Blanc 2005
  • Concha y Toro Likan Merlot 2005
  • Frescobaldi Castello di Pomino Vin Santo 2001

Chateau Bonnet Blanc 2005 (Bordeaux)
$13.15 (LCBO #83709)
This bargain-priced Entre-Deux-Mers is riper than previous vintages with a softer mouth feel. Green plum and cut grass aromas follow through as flavours on the palate. Medium-bodied, clean and mouth-filling with a crisp, spicy finish. Great value. ***½
Food match: grilled scallops; smoked fish

Concha y Toro Likan Merlot 2005 (Chile)
$11.95 (1000 mL, LCBO #665331)
If you want to go the tetrapak route, the best value I've found after tasting over 70 of the blighters is this Merlot from Chile. Deeply coloured, it has an earthy, black cherry flavour with soft tannins. ***½
Food match: hamburger; pizza

Frescobaldi Castello di Pomino Vin Santo 2001 (Tuscany)
$33.95 (500 mL, Vintages #661249)
If icewine is too sweet for your palate, then this beautifully balanced Vin Santo will fill the bill. Coppery-amber colour; dried apricots and nuts on the nose; medium-bodied, semi-sweet, elegant with great length. ****½
Food match: biscotti; gorgonzola
