Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Fiole Blanc 2005
When you think of Châteauneuf-du-Pape the first thing that probably springs to mind is a beefy, rich red wine. Well, they make a little white wine in Châteauneuf. New to the LCBO is La Fiole Blanc 2005, a white wine from that southern Rhône region that makes an ideal substitute for Chardonnay. Made from Roussanne and Marsanne grape varieties, it's straw coloured with a bouquet of white flowers and minerals; it's full-bodied with white peach and grapefruit flavours. The lively spine of acidity keeps the flavour lingering on the palate. It costs $28.15, but when you think of the price of fine white Burgundy, that's not so bad. The wine is La Fiole Blanc 2005 from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For Post City magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #26732, $28.15)

Aliança Foral Reserva 2005
Last week I recommended a red table wine from Portugal's Douro Valley made from the same grapes they use to make Port. Well, here's another good bargain from the same region. Aliança Foral Reserva 2005 is a blend of three of the grapes that go into Port. It's a deeply coloured wine that sees no oak. It's fruit driven with an earthy blackberry flavour that coats the tongue. Full-bodied and easy drinking, it costs – wait for it – $8.25 a bottle. An ideal wine for hearty stews or a simple hamburger. That's Aliança Foral 2005 from Portugal's Douro Valley. If you miss any of my wine recommendations in the car, you can always find them on tonyaspler.com. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #239046, $8.25)
