680 NEWS wine reviews – May 4–6, 2007

Wente Chardonnay 2005
In the Livermore Valley, you'll find California's oldest family-owned winery – Wente Vineyards. Founded in 1883, the company is currently operated by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family, who farm some 3,000 acres of vineyards. What I like about their wines is their consumer-friendly pricing, especially for their Chardonnay. The current 2005 vintage on the shelves is a full-bodied wine with sweet apple and citrus flavours and restrained oak notes. It costs $16.25 a bottle and it makes an admirable match for grilled fish or Caesar salad. That's Wente Chardonnay 2005 from California. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($16.25. LCBO #175430)

Lizard Flat Chardonnay Verhelho 2005
Recently I reviewed an Australian wine in a litre tetrapak called Lizard Flat Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot – and I mentioned it was the best red wine in this format that I had tasted. Well, Lizard Flat also has a companion white wine in tetrapak made from a blend of Chardonnay and Verdelho grapes. And this is no slouch either in the price-for-quality department. The wine has flavours of melon and pear, nicely balanced by bright acidity. An ideal picnic wine when the weather warms up. That's Lizard Flat Chardonnay Verdelho 2005 from Australia, selling for $12.95 a litre in tetrapak. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($12.95, LCBO #20610)
