680 NEWS wine reviews – June 8–10, 2007

Sip Ontario
Calamus Estate Winery in Jordan, Ontario, has been racking up gold medals in wine competitions after only a couple of years of operation. At this year's Ontario wine awards they walked away with gold medals for their Pinot Gris 2006 and their Estate Riesling 2005. But you won't find these wines at the LCBO. You'll have to drive to the winery. The same thing for Mountain Road Wine Company's Reserve Chardonnay 2003. The best of Ontario's wines from wineries large and small will be available for tasting at Sip Ontario on Tuesday June 12th at the historic Distillery District in the Fermentation Cellar. For details on how to reserve tickets, visit the website ontariowineawards.ca. A complimentary shuttle bus service operates from Union Station from 6:30 pm to 10 pm. I'll see you there. Château de Montguerre Crémant de Loire Brut
The French use the term crémant for sparkling wines that have less gas pressure than champagne but are made by the same method – that is, a secondary fermentation in bottle. Currently at Vintages is a crémant from the Loire Valley at a delightfully affordable price. It's Chateau de Montguerre Crémant de Loire Brut. It's medium straw in colour with a minerally, crabapple and citrus nose. On the palate it's medium-bodied, well made with a fresh, lively finish. The kind of bubbly that goes well with cold salmon or is very refreshing as a pre-dinner aperitif. It costs $19.15, and when you compare that to Champagne prices, it's a bargain. That's Chateau de Montguerre Crémant de Loire Brut at Vintages outlets. For Post City magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($19.15, LCBO #621896)
