Dan Aykroyd Discovery Series Cabernet Merlot 2005
Dan Aykroyd, erstwhile Blues Brother, Ghost Buster and Conehead, now has his own wines on release and next year he'll have his own winery in Niagara. Just released is the Dan Aykroyd Discovery Series Cabernet Merlot 2005 along with a companion Chardonnay. These wines, incidentally, are made by Lakeview Cellars and they represent a surprisingly good debut: The Cab Merlot is deep ruby in colour with a nose of red berries, dark chocolate and pencil lead; it's medium-bodied, with a dry savoury taste, nicely balanced with supple tannins. It costs $16.95 at the LCBO. Serve it with grilled lamb chops or lamb burgers. That's Dan Aykroyd Discovery Series Cabernet Merlot 2005 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($16.95, LCBO #53827)

Mount Riley Sauvignon Blanc 2006
In the July 7th Vintages release is one of the best New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs I have tasted in some time. It's Mount Riley Sauvignon Blanc 2006 and when I sampled it a few weeks ago in the LCBO tasting lab I just put my glass down and said "Wow!" You couldn't tell the intensity of the flavours from the colour, which is very pale straw. But on the nose it has an intense passion fruit and freshly cut grass bouquet. It has well-extracted gooseberry and citrus flavours that linger on the palate. A really mouth-watering wine that does well with grilled salmon or goat's cheese. It costs $18.95 at Vintages and is wroth every penny. That's Mount Riley Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from New Zealand. For Post City magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($18.95, Vintages #981670)
