 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Broadbent Malmsey 10 Years Old
  • Hillebrand Trius

Broadbent Malmsey 10 Years Old (Madeira)
$34.80
A selection by wine guru Michael Broadbent and his son Bartholomew of casks produced by Justino Henriques. Deep amber colour with a green olive rim; on the nose, dried figs; on the palate, elegant, toasty and rich with dried fruit flavours and vibrant acidity. Great length. (Available through Vintages stores.)

Hillebrand Trius "Grand Red" 1999 (Ontario)
$52
A new flagship wine from the Hillebrand portfolio, as reflected in the price. Only 40 barrels made. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, aged 11 months in French and American oak. Deeply coloured and opaque with a bouquet of cedar, dark chocolate, blackcurrant and vanilla; beautifully balanced with well extracted fruit. The tannins are there but not excessive. Will cellar well. (Order through www.winecountryathome.com.)

Mer Soleil Vineyard Chardonnay 1999 (Central Coast, California)
$59.95
A blockbuster California Chardonnay, with barrel oak to burn, yet with the muscular style of a Montrachet. Golden straw colour with an intense toasty, spicy nose highlighted by fresh pineapple; on the palate the fruit evolves to a plush caramel character and lingers long.
