680News wine reviews – September 28–30, 2007

Le Freak Shiraz Viognier 2005
From the two gentlemen who brought you Fat Bastard, another off-the-wall label – Le Freak. This is a blend from the Pays d'Oc made up of Syrah and Viognier. A blend of mainly red grapes with a touch of white grapes, the formula for the Syrahs of the nortern Rhone. Except to cash in on the popularity of Shiraz they have called their wine Shiraz rather than Syrah. But that's okay. Ruby-purple in colour, the wine has a bouquet of blackberries and white pepper with a touch of oak; fruity on the palate, it's nicely balanced with a lively acidic finish. It costs $15.15 a bottle at major LCBO outlets. A wine for hearty meat dishes. That's Le Freak Shiraz Viognier 2005 from the Pays d'Oc region of southern France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($15.15, LCBO #672261)

Frescobaldi Castiglioni Chianti 2005
Twenty kilometers southwest of Florence on an estate called Castiglioni the Frescobaldi family grow a Chianti that makes a great food wine. Castiglioni Chianti 2005 is a rich ruby-purple colour with a nose of cherries and cherry blossom with a spicy, herbal note. The wine is medium-bodied with a sweetness of fruit in mid-palate that dries out on the finish to mellow tannins. It costs $14.95 a bottle at major LCBO outlets. You can drink it with most Italian dishes that involve tomato sauces, especially with lasagna, veal or osso buco. I'm getting hungry just talking about it. That's Frescobaldi Castiglioni Chianti 2005 from Tuscany. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($14.95, LCBO #545319)
