680News wine reviews – October 26–28, 2007

Yalumba Shiraz Viognier 2005
In the northern Rhone, winemakers add a small percentage of the white grape Viognier to their red Syrah during fermentation. They found that the presence of this low acid white stabilizes the colour of the red wine and gives it a floral bouquet. The Australians who call their Syrah Shiraz have adopted this technique. Yalumba Shiraz Viognier 2005 is a Rhône-style red from Down Under. Deep ruby in colour, it has a smoky blackberry nose; it's medium- to full-bodied with blackberry and floral flavours backed by good acidity and a peppery finish. It costs $19.95 at vintages outlets. Match it with rare beef or goulash. That's Yalumba Shiraz Viognier 2005 from South Australia. For Post City Magazines I'm Tony Aspler. ($19.95, Vintages #524926)

Deinhard Riesling Dry 2005
When it comes to German Riesling the LCBO has a paltry selection on the general list. Which is a shame, since German Riesling is one of the world's great wines. A good introduction to German Riesling is Deinhard Dry Riesling 2005 from Rheinhessen. It's not as dry as the label would suggest but it's a charming, easy-drinking wine. Pale straw in colour with a nose of sweet grapefruit and honey. It's light-bodied with an off-dry apple-y finish. It costs $12.15. Try it with pork schnitzel or Thai dishes. That's Deinhard Riesling Dry 2005 from Germany. If you miss any of my recommendations you can find them by visiting 680News.com and clicking on my site. For Post City Magazines I'm Tony Aspler. ($12.15, LCBO #60004)
