LCBO Celebrates 25 Years of Nouveau Wines

The LCBO is celebrating 25 years of offering nouveau wine by releasing six nouveau wines at 400 liquor stores starting at 10:00 am on November 15, 2007. The annual release on the third Thursday of each November is greeted around the world with festivities and heralds the first wine of the year's harvest.

The nouveau wines available this year are as follows:

In most participating LCBO stores:

France

  • Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau 750 mL $13.25 (2,000 cases)
  • Duboeuf Gamay Nouveau 750 mL $8.95 (1,480 cases)
  • Jeanjean Syrah Primeur 750 mL $9.95 (1,900 cases)

Italy

  • Negrar Novello del Veneto IGT 750 mL $9.45 (2,535 cases)
  • Novio Vino Novello 750 mL $9.95 (1,176 cases)

In Vintages fine wine and premium spirits sections at select LCBO stores:

France

  • Duboeuf Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 750 mL $15.95 (2,000 cases)

The nouveau wine tradition started in the vineyards of the Beaujolais region of France more than 100 years ago when local winemakers developed a quick-maturing wine to celebrate the completion of the harvest with their workers. The result was a fresh, fruity wine that they called Beaujolais Nouveau or Beaujolais Primeur. News of this tradition spread and the annual release of nouveau wines eventually evolved into an international celebration.

In the 1980s, Italy also began exporting nouveau-style wines called vino novello, and Ontario has produced gamay nouveau wines in some years.

Nouveau wines are best served slightly chilled and matched with lighter foods such as appetizers. To enjoy their fresh, fruity character at its best, they are best consumed young, although they are still drinkable up to a year after release.

For more information on the 2007 nouveau wines and participating LCBO stores, call the toll-free LCBO Infoline: 1-800-ONT-LCBO (668-5226). In Toronto, call 416-365-5900 or visit your nearest LCBO store. The TTY number for the deaf and hearing impaired is 416 864-6898 or 1-800-361-3291.
