Chateau des Charmes Chardonnay Sur Lie 2006 Silver Label (Niagara-on-the-Lake)
$10.45 (LCBO #636860)
This unoaked Chardonnay is well worth the money. The colour is medium straw, with a nose of apple and apple blossom. It has a dry, medium-bodied, apple flavour with fresh acidity and decent length. ***½
Food match: tilapia; camembert

Plantatree Chardonnay 2005 (California)
$14.95 (LCBO #64824)
This Chardonnay produced by Ironstone Vineyards in California is bulk-shipped to Ontario and bottled in PET plastic bottles to lessen the carbon footprint. It's the brainchild of Steven Campbell of Lifford Wine Agency. From each bottle sold $2.50 will be donated to plant a tree in the province.
The wine has a sweet pear flavour and sustains well on the palate. ***½
Food match: roast chicken; pork chop

Plantatree Merlot 2005 (California)
$14.95 (LCBO #65151)
Plantatree Merlot is one of three line-priced wines that will benefit the environment. As with the Chardonnay, $2.50 from the sale of this Merlot will be donated to plant a tree in Ontario. The Merlot is more successful than the Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a sweet blueberry and blackcurrant flavour, medium-bodied with soft tannins. ***½
Food match: beef stew; cheddar
