More Wines of the Week

  • Niagara College Dean's List Chardonnay 2006
  • Peller Estates Private Reserve Gamay Noir 2006
  • Thirty Bench Red 2005

Three quality Niagara VQA wines this week. They're not available in the LCBO; the best option is to visit the winery, or order them through www.winerytohome.com.

Niagara College Dean's List Chardonnay 2006 (St. David's Bench)
$28.15 (from Niagara College Teaching Winery or through www.winerytohome.com)
This is one of the best Chardonnays Niagara College has made. Golden straw in colour, it has an intense, spicy nose, very Burgundian in style, apple with well integrated oak. The flavour is rich and full on the palate with concentrated apple and melon flavours with spicy oak; great length. Fleshy but well balanced; clove on the finish. ****½
Food match: lobster; grilled salmon

Peller Estates Private Reserve Gamay Noir 2006 (Niagara Peninsula)
$19.05 (from Peller Estates or through www.winerytohome.com)
A flavourful Gamay Noir. Medium ruby in colour with a nose of violets, cherry and a note of spicy oak. Well extracted, black cherry fruit, lively acidity; clean and true with good length; characteristic peppery finish. Drink now. ****
Food match: ham steak; roast chicken

Thirty Bench Red 2005 (Beamsville Bench)
$22.20 (from Thirty Bench or through www.winerytohome.com)
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot: dense purple-ruby colour with a bouquet of pencil lead, vanilla oak, chocolate and red berries; dry, medium-bodied, petit château style; firm structure, well made, tannic finish. Hold for a year. ****
Food match: rack of lamb; steak
