Top Picks from Vintages' August 3 release
Pol Roger Brut Chardonnay 1993 (Champagne)
This is one of the best champagnes I've had in some time. It is remarkably
fresh and lively and was probably recently disgorged. Lemony-straw in
colour, it has an intriguing nose of toasted nuts and apple with a yeasty
note; rich and full on the palate, it's still very youthful. A marvellous
champagne for food.
Jose de Soto Amontillado Medium Dry Sherry (Jerez)
You won't find a better bargain than this in any liquor store. Mahogany
colour with a nose of nuts and raisins; spicy cashew nut flavour with
an initial sweet butterscotch note on the middle palate with a long, clean
finish. Chill before serving.
Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Kabinett 1995 (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)
A well-priced, old-style, aged Mosel Riesling that's drinking beautifully
now. Pale straw colour; characteristic nose of maturing Riesling –
petrol, honey and peaches with a floral top note; off-dry, elegant peach
and lime flavours; great length.
Saint Clair Merlot "Rapaura Reserve" 2000 (Marlborough,
This Kiwi Merlot has great elegance and style. Purple-ruby in colour;
vanilla, blackberry and floral bouquet; medium-bodied, blackberry-blueberry
flavours, well balanced, nicely integrated oak.
