680News wine reviews – November 30–December 2, 2007

Moueix Merlot 2003
Merlot is one of the grape varieties that goes into the blend for red Bordeaux. In fact, Merlot is the most widely planted variety in Bordeaux and plays a major role in the wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. Rarely do you see it as a wine by itself in Bordeaux but you can taste a straight Merlot made by Christian Moueix, who happens to own the world's most expensive red wine – Chateau Pétrus. Moueix Merlot 2003 – Moueix is spelled M-o-u-e-i-x – is a Vintages Essential, which means, theoretically, it should always be in stock in Vintages outlets. The wine is deep ruby in colour with a creamy, cedar and blueberry nose; it's medium-bodied, elegant and dry; firmly structured and well made. It costs $14.95 a bottle. Match it with lamb or veal. That Moueix Merlot 2003 from Bordeaux. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($14.95, Vintages #961227)

Louis Jadot Bourgogne Chardonnay 2005
When it comes to white wine, Burgundy is my favourite and I'm always on the lookout for bargains because white Burgundy can be an expensive habit. Louis Jadot Bourgogne Chardonnay 2005 is a Vintages Essential wine, which means it should be available year-round at Vintages outlets. This wine is straw coloured and offers toasty oak, clove and apple nuances on the nose. It's medium-bodied, dry and clean with apple and lemon flavours. Its fruit, oak and acidity are all in balance. Louis Jadot Bourgogne Chardonnay 2005 costs $18.95 a bottle at Vintages. Try it with salmon steak or roast chicken. If you're driving and can't make a note, you can always pick up this review by visiting 680News.com and clicking on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($18.95, Vintages #933077)
