680News wine reviews – December 7–9, 2007

Segura Viudas
Champagne is champagne, but if I'm looking for an every-day sparkler I head for Spain. The Spanish call their wines made by the champagne method "cava," following a court case in the 1960s which prohibited them from using the term "champagne." Cava wines may not be as refined and elegant as the real thing but the price is right. Segura Viudas Brut costs $14.15 a bottle. It has a yeasty nose with stoney, citrus flavour that finishes with a nuttiness. Very dry and fresh and excellent value. It's a good wine to launch a daughter into marriage with. That's Segura Viudas Brut, a bubbly from Spain. For this and other reviews you may have missed, visit 680News.com and click on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #158493, $14.14)

La Puerta Chardonnay 2006
I guess I don't need a crystal ball to predict that Argentina will be the next big thing when it comes to wine. It's already happening, especially with the red wines made from the Malbec grapes, Argentine's signature variety. But the whites are pretty interesting too. And you'll love the price. Where else can you get a Chardonnay that had lots of bounce for under $10. Valle de La Puerta Chardonnay 2006 costs $9.35 including your bottle deposit. The wine is deeply coloured with rich pineapple and peach flavours mingled with buttery oak and mineral notes. Nothing subtle here, just mouth-filling flavour. Try it with roast pork and apple sauce. That's Valle de la Puerta Chardonnay 2006 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (LCBO #614693, $9.35)
