680News wine reviews – December 21–23, 2007

Fresita
Here's a thought for those Christmas parties – a sparkling wine with under 8% alcohol that tastes of fresh strawberries. It's called Fresita and it comes from Chile. It's an organic sparkling wine made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with 3% natural strawberry pulp added. It costs $13.95 a bottle at the LCBO. The wine is deep pink in colour with a nose of fresh strawberries. The wine has a sweet strawberry flavour – as you'd expect – and it goes down very easily. You have to chill it well to bring down the sense of sweetness. The back label suggests 60 minutes in the freezer but you can leave it outside the back door these days. And if it's too sweet for your palate you can always add a slice of orange. That's Fresita, Spanish for little strawberry. A wine for sipping around the fire to remind you of summer. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($13.95, LCBO #56697)

Hardy's Nottage Hill Shiraz 2005
Here's another budget-priced Aussie Shiraz to add to your cellar: Hardy's Nottage Hill Shiraz 2005 from South East Australia. The wine is deep ruby-purple in colour with a sweet blackberry nose. It feel soft on the palate, fruit forward with an end note of white pepper and tangerine-like acidity. It costs $13 a bottle at the LCBO. You can match it with beef stew or aged cheddar. That's Hardy's Nottage Hill Shiraz 2005 from South East Australia. My apologies to all the Aussies listening for the accent. You can find this review without the accent by going to 680 News.com and clicking on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler and may I wish you all the best of the season. ($13.00, LCBO #375964)
