Tony Aspler Is Made a Member of the Order of Canada
On Friday, December 28, it was announced that I have been appointed to the Order of Canada as a Member (see the press release at www.gg.ca). The citation reads: "For his contributions as a leading authority on Canadian wines who has been key to the development of the Canadian wine industry."
The appointments were actually made on October 25. I have known about it for six weeks and have been bursting to tell my friends and family. I will formally receive the insignia at a ceremony sometime in 2008 (you can see it at www.gg.ca/honours/nat-ord/oc/). I now get to put C.M. after my name (and it doesn't stand for Cabernet-Merlot in this case).
While growing up, I tried to impress upon my parents that what I really wanted to do for a living was drink wine and write about it. I wish they had lived to see this day. They were worried about my choice of career. They wanted me to be a lawyer.
