More Wines of the Week

  • Coyote's Run Bob Izumi Red 2005

Anselmi San Vincenzo 2006 (Veneto)
$14.85 (Vintages #948158)
My favourite Soave producer, but you won't find the term Soave on any of Anselmi's labels. That's because he became disenchanted with the DOC regulations that govern this wine in the Veneto region. Anselmi adds a little Chardonnay to the traditional blend of Trebbiano and Garganega grapes. The result is a very satisfying medium-bodied white wine with flavours of peach, mango and melon embraced by fresh citrus acidity. ****
Food match: prosciutto and melon; spaghetti vongole.

Peninsula Ridge Fumé Blanc 2006 (Niagara Peninsula)
$26.95 (available only on line through www.winerytohome.com)
One of the best dry white wines from Ontario I've tasted in a long time. The nose is all smoky, cut grass and vanilla oak, the flavour rich and spicy with lively green melon and gooseberry notes. ****½
Food match: blackened scallops; Caesar salad

Coyote's Run Bob Izumi Red 2005 (Niagara Peninsula)
$22.20 (available at the winery – 1-877-COYOTE3 – or online at www.winerytohome.com)
A firmly structured, medium-bodied dry red wine with flavours of currants and dark chocolate. With the sale of each bottle, $1 will be donated to the Fishing Forever Foundation. ****
Food match: rack of lamb; steak
