680News wine reviews – February 1–3, 2008

Château des Charmes White Label Chardonnay 2006
The most reliable Chardonnay from Ontario under $12 is Château des Charmes. Vintage after vintage this winery manages to deliver a clean, well-made wine at a bargain price. And the 2006 White Label Chardonnay is no exception. It costs $11.40 a bottle at the LCBO. Light straw in colour with a minerally, apple bouquet, it's medium-bodied with a dry, crisp apple flavour and lemony acidity. Try it with roast chicken or runny cheeses. That's Château des Charmes White Label Chardonnay 2006 from Niagara. If you miss any of these recommendations you can find them by visiting www.680News.com and clicking on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($11.40, LCBO #56754)

Anselmi San Vincenzo 2006
My favourite Soave producer is Roberto Anselmi, but you won't find the term Soave on any of Anselmi's labels. That's because he became disenchanted with the DOC regulations that govern this wine in the Veneto region. Anselmi adds a little Chardonnay to the traditional blend of Trebbiano and Garganega grapes. The result is a very satisfying medium-bodied white wine with flavours of peach, mango and melon embraced by fresh citrus acidity. Anselmi calls this wine San Vincenzo and the 2006 vintage is available at Vintages stores for $14.85. Try it with prosciutto and melon or with spaghetti vongole. That Anselmi San Vincenzo 2006 from Veneto, at Vintages outlets. For Post City magazine, I'm Tony Aspler. ($14.85, Vintages #948158)
