A Nice Pear
by Sheila Swerling-Puritt
Absolut Vodka has a great thing going. Over the years, this creative distiller has generated a portfolio of vodkas flavoured with a variety of pure fruit (and other) flavours, taking advantage of the versatility of vodka as a fine complement to various mixers and juices. Their latest entry is Absolut Pears, which contains all-natural pear with no added sugar. (It's even Kosher, bearing the official OU designation.)
It's a little surprising that the company waited this long to introduce a pear vodka. After all, folks have loved pears' honeyed flavour and enticing perfumes at least since Homer (the Greek poet, not the Simpson's father) referred to them as "Gifts of the Gods" almost three thousand years ago. European settlers brought pears to America in the 1700s. Today, pears are the second most popular fruit in the US after their cousins the apples. (For you health-conscious vodka lover out there, pears are as good for you as they are delicious, rich in dietary fiber, potassium and vitamin C).
This fruit-flavoured vodka can be enjoyed neat, over ice, or in mixed drinks. It also performs beautifully in cooking recipes, for example curing salmon for Gravlax. The aromas in this vodka are of mellow pears with a sensually stimulating hint of sweet almonds. On the palate, it's crisp and full-bodied with soft ripe fruit through to a long finish. The rich, mellow pear flavours are unique, making this vodka the perfect partner to mixers and exotic juices.
