 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Bottega Vino dei Poeti Prosecco Brut
  • Ubuntu Sauvignon Blanc 2007
  • Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Bottega Vino dei Poeti Prosecco Brut (Veneto)
$13.30 (LCBO #897702)
For its price this little charmer is an ideal substitute for champagne, especially if you drink it on a daily basis. It's pale straw in colour with a minerally, apple peel nose and a dry apple and citrus flavour; light-bodied at 11 per cent alcohol and persistent on the palate. ***½
Food match: aperitif wine; crab cakes

Ubuntu Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (South Africa)
$9.90 (LCBO #36798)
Now here's a great bargain Sauvignon Blanc. Ubuntu, I'm told, means "to share" in Bantu languages. And what else is a bottle of wine for? This Sauvignon Blanc has a bouquet of cut grass, nettles and green plum. It's light on the palate with a crisp flavour of fresh gooseberries. ***½
Food match: goat's cheese; Caesar salad

Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Mendoza Valley, Argentina)
$19.95 (Vintages #985002)
A remarkably elegant Cab from Argentina that comes on like a red Bordeaux. Dense purple-black colour; vanilla oak and blackcurrant on the nose; complex flavours of black fruits and cassis with minerally, coffee bean and mint nuances. Lovely mouth feel. ****½
Food match: rack of lamb; veal chop
