680News wine reviews – February 29–March 2, 2008

Dog Point Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2006
Leap year day, February 29th, is the day when girls can take the initiative and propose. To my mind it should also be a national day when women buy the wine. So if my wife, Deborah, is listening, I want a bottle of Dog Point Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from New Zealand. You'll find it at Vintages outlets, Deb. It costs $21.80 and it's a quintessential Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Pale straw in colour with an intense nose of cut grass, asparagus and gooseberries. It's full-bodied, with a lovely mouth-feel and finishes with tangerine acidity. Why don't you make trout in almonds and a Caesar salad. It would make a perfect match. Did you get that? Dog Point Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2006 from New Zealand at Vintages stores. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. (Vintages #677450)

Azzaro Syrah 2006
The latest celebrity to get into the wine business is the Paris designer and perfumer Loris Azzaro. He teamed up with winemaker Frederic Roger to produce a portfolio of budget-priced wines in the Languedoc region of Southern France. Each bottle comes well dressed with its own nifty paper tie. The Azzaro Syrah is the best of the three reds at the LCBO, all line priced at $12.85. The Syrah from the 2006 vintage is ruby coloured with an earthy, red berry nose. It's medium-bodied, firmly structured and dry with a sour cherry flavour. It's a wine for hamburgers or pizza – in spite of the tie – and it costs a lot less than Azzaro cologne. That's Azzaro Syrah 2006 from the Languedoc. For this and other wine reviews go to 680 News.com and click on my link. For Post City Magazines. I'm Tony Aspler. ($12.85, LCBO #64626)
