Conde de Valdemar Crianza 1999 (Rioja, Spain)
Fifteen months in a mix of French and American oak have given this wine
a spicy, sandalwood nose and tamed Tempranillo’s testing tannins.
Spicy cheery flavour with lively acidity – a great change from budget-priced
Burgundy. Food matches: tomato-based pasta dishes, barbecued chicken.
Luigi Righetti Campoleti Valpolicella 1999 (Veneto)
Comes on like Masi Campofiorin, the wine that started this genre of ripasso-laced
Valpolicella. Dense purple-black colour; earthy, vanilla, black cherry
nose; a flavour of dried raisins, bitter chocolate and driving acidity;
full-bodied, old style Italian wine. Food matches: highly spiced
pasta dishes, Parmesan cheese.
Hillebrand Trius Riesling 2000 (Niagara, Ontario)
Not as dry as previous vintages but a solid performer. Pale straw colour
with a green tint; lime, floral, minerally nose; broad mid-palate with
crab apple, grapefruit and lemon flavours. A touch of residual sweetness
in the end taste. Food matches: a good aperitif or with Thai green
