680News wine reviews – June 13–15, 2008

Pra Soave Classico 2006
Soave is usually one of those gulpable Italian white wines that's dry and easy-drinking. But some producers take the Gargenega grape very seriously and make wines with great flavour and style. Currently at Vintages stores is Pra (spelled P-R-A) Soave Classico 2006. At $19.95 it's more costly than most Soaves, but this is the real deal. The wine has a nose of ripe apricots and citrus fruits with a mineral note. It's full on the palate, beautifully balanced with ripe peach and apricot flavours. It marries well with roast chicken or pork. That's Pra Soave Classico 2006 from the Veneto region, available at Vintages. For Post city Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($19.95, Vintages #74534)

Dan Aykroyd Vidal Icewine 2006
Comedian Dan Aykroyd's latest triumph is not in films but in wine. The winery that bears his name won Wine of the Year at the 2008 Ontario Wine Awards. And the wine in question is Dan Aykroyd Signature Reserve Vidal Icewine 2005. The wine offers flavours of sweet honey, ripe tropical fruits and butterscotch with hints of lychee. It costs $79.95 a half bottle but you can sample it at Sip & Savour Ontario, a consumer tasting event that happens this coming Tuesday to kick off Ontario Wine Week. The venue is The Distillery Historic District, Fermenting Cellar. For information visit Ontariowineawards.ca. See you there. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler.
