680News wine reviews – July 4–6, 2008

Serego Aligheri Poderi del Bello Ovile 2004
Serego Aligheri is an estate in the Veneto region that dates back to the poet Dante. They made rich Amarone. The noble family has recently acquired an estate in Cinigiano in Tuscany. It's not in the Chianti region but it's a red wine in Chianti-style red made from Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Ciliegolo grapes. It's deep ruby in colour with a rich plummy nose with licorice notes. It's full on the palate, well balanced with a sour cherry finish. And a lovely mouth feel. It costs $18.95 at Vintages outlets. Match with osso buco or meat-sauced pastas. That's Serego Aligheri Poderi del Bello Ovile 2004 from Tuscany. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($18.95, LCBO #73106)

Aveleda Fonte Vinho Verde 2007
When you're drinking wine in hot sunshine you want low alcohol and good acidity to freshen the palate. For $8.45 a bottle you can't do better than Aveleda Fonte Vinho Verde 2007 from Portugal. The alcohol weighs in at a flyweight 8.5 per cent. The wine has a nose of lemons and wet stones. It's light as you'd expect and brisk on the palate with a touch of sweetness in mid taste but it finishes dry. A wine for deep-fried calamari or grilled sardines. That's Aveleda Fonte Vinho Verde 2007 from Portugal. Chill it well. If you missed this review go to 680News.com and click on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($8.45, LCBO #5322)
