Bodegas Osborne Solaz Merlot Tempranillo 2005 (Spain)
$10.75 (LCBO #74021)
Dense purple colour with a nose of dark chocolate, earth and coconut; it's medium-bodied with plum and blackberry flavours. An easy drinking wine. ***½
Food match: barbecued ribs; hamburgers.
Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2007 (South Africa)
$13.05 (LCBO #22251)
South Africa goes head to head with New Zealand. Pale straw in colour with that cut grass and vegetal nose that explodes on the palate to rich flavours of green fig and gooseberry with that telltale grassy note. There's a touch of residual sweetness in mid palate and lively acidity to give it length. ****
Food match: goat's cheese; avocado salad.
Château des Charmes Cuvée Andrée Rosé 2006 (Ontario)
$13.95 (Vintages #333260)
This is consistently one of the best pink wines in Ontario. Named for proprietor Paul Bosc's wife Andrée, it won the gold medal at this year's Ontario Wine Awards. Deep pink in colour, it has a nose of wild strawberries and warm earth. It's dry, full on the palate with strawberry and citrus flavours, well balanced with good length. A very tasty wine and good value. ****
Food match: cold cuts; chicken salad.
