680News wine reviews – July 11–13, 2008

Bodegas Osborne Solaz Merlot Tempranillo 2005
Spain is responding to the challenge of inexpensive wines from Chile and Argentina with some very drinkable wines in the $10 to $12 range of its own. Bodegas Osborne Solaz Merlot Tempranillo 2005 is dense purple colour with a nose of dark chocolate, earth and coconut; it's medium-bodied with plum and blackberry flavours. An easy drinking wine that you can match with barbecued ribs or hamburgers. It costs $10.75 a bottle at the LCBO. That's Bodegas Osborne Solaz Merlot Tempranillo 2005 from Spain. Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setúbal 2001
If you're a dentist, don't listen to this review, because the wine is only for consumers with a very sweet tooth. It's Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setúbal 2001 from Portugal and it's only available at Vintages stores. Made from the Muscat grape, this wine is amber-coloured with a sweet raisiny nose. It's full-bodied and unctuous with honey and apricot flavours and enough acidity to give it structure. You won't find another dessert wine at this price – $11.95 for a 750 mL bottle. Serve it well chilled by itself or with blue cheese or meringue. That's Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setúbal 2001 from Portugal available at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($11.75, Vintages July 5th release #0996181)
