Colio Girls' Night Out Merlot 2006
The front label of Colio Girls' Night Out Merlot 2006 shows a picture of a red dress. The back label reads, "If only a man could be as dependable as this silky red thing." Now that's provocative, but at $12.95 the price is not. This medium-bodied wine from the Lake Erie North Shore appellation is dense ruby-purple in colour with an oaky, plum and vanilla nose with a floral top note. It tastes of black cherries with lively acidity and has a firm structure. Colio Girls' Night Out Merlot 2006 is certainly going to be a conversation piece. It also comes in Chardonnay and Rosé at the same price. The back label for Chardonnay reads, "If only a man could be as dependable as this classy number." In your face or what. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($12.95, LCBO #89847)

Château des Charmes Cuvee Andrée Rose 2006
On a hot day on the back deck there's nothing like a refreshing glass of chilled rosé. No other wines speaks to summer as much as a pink wine. Château des Charmes Cuvée Andrée Rosé 2006 is what I have in the fridge at the moment. This is consistently one of the best pink wines in Ontario. This wine, named for proprietor Paul Bosc's wife Andrée, won the gold medal at this year's Ontario Wine Awards. Deep pink in colour, it has a nose of wild strawberries and warm earth. It's dry, full on the palate with strawberry and citrus flavours, well balanced with good length. A very tasty wine and good value at $13.95 at Vintages outlets. That's Chateau des Charmes Cuvee Andrée Rosé 2006 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($13.95, Vintages #333260)
