A Wine Lover's Diary, part 202 (August 18, 2008)
Monday, August 11: A short week this week as I'm off for my annual fishing trip to the Tuksukatuk River, a thousand miles north of Montreal, near Puvirnituq. The same camp our group went last year but am hearing that the water level is low and we might not be able to get up the river to the waterfall where we were pulling fish out at every cast. Deborah has bought me a new fishing rod as a birthday present and I've stocked up on pixies and daredevil lures. My son Guy tells me he lost ten golf balls in one round of golf. Well, I lose lures, especially on the rocks in fast running water going after Arctic Char. For dinner, Flat Rock Red Twisted 2006 with steak from last night.
Tuesday, August 12: Downtown for 8 am to have breakfast with Ashley Pover, my friend from England who is renting a cottage in the Muskokas. Then a meeting with Donald Ziraldo to discuss the Ontario Wine Awards but Donald didn't show. Lunch with Wendy Cheropita, who is under contract to Peller Estates, to catch up on industry gossip. Back home to answer emails and finish inputting Vintages release reviews before heading back downtown for a meeting of the Board of Grand Cru, the fund-raiser for Toronto General and Western Hospitals. For dinner, Hillebrand Red Artist Series Meritage 2007 with pasta.
Wednesday, August 13: Finished packing for the fishing trip. This evening is our anniversary dinner, which we traditionally celebrate with two other couples, Frank and Patty-Ann Daley and Rod and Bessie Seyffert, who were also married on August 17th. We're starting with Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut with smoked salmon and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus grilled on the BBQ. Followed by Wagner Stempel Höllberg Riesling Spätlese 2007. Then at table, black cod poached in sake on a bed of arugula with Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard Chardonnay 2004. Sirloin steak on the BBQ with French beans and grilled peppers with Stratus Petit Verdot 2005. A cheese plate with Crasto Douro 2006 and a lemon and raspberry cake with lemon sorbet and Château des Charmes Riesling Icewine 2004.
