680News wine reviews – September 19–21, 2008

Gonzalez Byass Nutty Solera Oloroso Sherry
Sherry is one of those drinks that has fallen off most consumers' radar. That's a pity since there are great bargains to be had from Spain's Jerez region. A steal at the price is Gonzalez Byass Nutty Solera Oloroso Sherry. Deep amber colour with a nutty toasty nose, it's off-dry, with a spicy taste of grilled walnuts and raisins with citrus acidity. You can also serve it lightly chilled if you like it a little drier. It costs $11.95 a bottle at Vintages outlets. If you're driving you can read these reviews by visiting 680News.com and clicking on my link. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($11.95, Vintages #0035204)

Red Knot Shiraz 2006
There are more Aussie Shiraz wines at the LCBO than you can shake a didgeridoo at, but a new listing called Red Knot Shiraz 2006 is worth trying. It comes from the McLaren Vale and is a step up from the usual bargain-priced downunder Shiraz. Dense purple in colour, on the nose it's all smoky black fruits; on the palate full-bodied, dry, mouth-filling blackberry and spice flavours. It costs $17.25 a bottle. Try it with pepper steak or aged cheddar. That's Red Knot Shiraz from Australia. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($17.25 LCBO #619395)
