 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Gallo Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio 2007
  • Miguel Torres Santa Digna Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2006
  • Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages "Combe aux Jacques" 2007

Gallo Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio 2007 (California)
$8.95 (LCBO #82594)
The winemaker's notes say that this is a blend of 75.84% Pinot Grigio, 8.25% Viognier, 5.12% Mixed White, 4.49% Symphony, 4.16% Muscat of Alexandria, 1.37% Chardonnay! Which makes it taste not like Pinot Grigio, thank heavens. Great for the price – fruity (apple and melon) with a touch of residual sweetness but enough acidity for balance. ***˝
Food match: spicy chicken; pork with apple sauce

Miguel Torres Santa Digna Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2006 (Chile)
$14.95 (Vintages Essential #177451)
Another great value wine from Chile, more elegant than others in this price range. Dense purple-black colour with a smoky, blackcurrant and plum bouquet; full-bodied with spicy, oaky tones melded with sweet fruit but well structured. ****
Food match: lamb cutlets; braised ribs

Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages "Combe aux Jacques" 2007 (Beaujolais)
$17.95 (Vintages Essentials #365924)
The antidote to Beaujolais Nouveau (the new wine that arrives on the shelves on November 20th). Deeply coloured ruby-purple with a peppery, cherry nose. Light and fruity with cherry and cranberry flavours; easy drinking and chillable. ****
Food match: ham steak; (chilled) grilled salmon
