Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Brut
With the price of champagne spiraling upward it's gratifying to see that Ontario sparklers can step in and fill the gap at nearly half the price. Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Brut costs $29.95 at Vintages outlets and you'd have to have a pretty keen palate to tell this from the real thing. The wine has a bouquet of toast, newly baked bread and winter apples. Crisply dry, the wine has a lovely mouth-feel, green apple and lemon peel flavours with a mineral note. A great way to start a meal or launch a daughter into marriage. That's Henry of Pelham Cuvee Catharine Brut from Ontario, available at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($29.95, Vintages #616441)

Peninsula Ridge Shiraz 2007
The 2007 reds from Ontario are beginning to appear on the shelves and you don't want to miss them. 2007 is the best vintage I have tasted from Niagara and I've be following this industry since 1975. A case in point is Peninsula Ridge Shiraz 2007. Purple-ruby in colour, it has an expressive nose of spicy blackberries and roast meat. On the palate you get sweet blackberry and dark chocolate flavours with a lively savoury finish. It costs $14.95 at the LCBO. Try it with hearty red meat dishes or some six-year-old cheddar. That's Peninsula Ridge Shiraz 2007 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler. ($14.95, LCBO #70052)
