Konrad & Conrad Marlborough Sauvignon 2001 (New Zealand)
Pale straw colour; light passionfruit and guava nose which comes through
on the palate with a strong, steady line of grapefruit acidity. Medium-bodied.
Drink now. Food match: warm goat's cheese salad; grilled shrimp.
Lailey Vineyard Zweigelt 2001 (Niagara-on-the-Lake)
The Zweigelt I've tried in Ontario (8 months in old American oak).
Available only at the winery (905-468-0503).
Purple colour; smoky, vanilla and blackberry with a floral top note; fruity
blackberry-blueberry flavour, well extracted, medium-bodied with a tannic
lift on the finish. Food match: BBQ hamburgers, pizza.
N.B. Watch out for the release of Derek Barnett's Lailey Vineyard
Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 at around $35. It's the best he's made,
even better than the 1999 Cabernet Merlot he produced for Southbrook.
It should appear in the Classics Catalogue.
Stoney Ridge Bench Chardonnay 2000 (Niagara)
Barrel-fermented in French oak, which gives the wine a deep yellow straw
colour and a ripe, tropical fruit nose; fat and full-bodied with a lively
caramel and pineapple flavour. Finishes well. Food match: Pork
loin, seafood in cream sauce.
