 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2008
  • Duboeuf Gamay Nouveau 2008
  • Mezzacorona Novio Vino Novello 2008

Today is the release date for Beaujolais Nouveau and the other new wines from the Pays d'Oc and Italy. If these are the harbingers of the quality of wines we can expect in 2008 then I'm going to skip a vintage. Two days ago I tasted all eight of the new wines released by the LCBO and for the most part they're a sorry lot. But if you must indulge in the ritual I suggest you try the following:

Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2008
$15.95 (Vintages #93270)
Purple colour with a bluish tint. A sweetish nose of blueberry pie; light and fruity with a cherry flavour but not a lot of intensity. ***½

Duboeuf Gamay Nouveau 2008 (Vin de Pays d'Ardèche)
$8.95 (LCBO #891846)
Purple colour, spicy black cherry; dry and savoury and firmly structured. ***½

Mezzacorona Novio Vino Novello 2008 (Trentino-Alto Adige)
$9.95 (LCBO #669275)
A blend of Teroldego and Lagrein grapes. Once you get by the sulphur on the nose, this wine has more oomph than any of the eight I tasted. Dry, black cherry flavour with lively acidity. ***½

Try them all with roasted chestnuts.
